LHS is a function! you can not describe a function with a constant as your RHS. maybe you meant: x^2 −4x−5=c+(ax+b)^2 ? then x^2 −4x−5=x^2 −4x+4−9=(x−2)^2 −9 ⇒a=1, b=−2, c=−9
