a^{2} (a + 1) + b^{2} (b + 1) + 5 a b

= a^{3} + b^{3} + a^{2} + b^{2} + 5 a b

= {(a + b)}^{3} - 3 a b (a + b) + {(a + b)}^{2} + 3 a b

= 1 - 3 a b + 1 + 3 a b

= 2
