(i) n(B) = 8 + 5 + x−4 = 11 + x n( B∪C) = 8+ x−4 + 5 + 2y = 9 + x + 2y ⇒ 11 + x = 9 +x + 2y ⇒ 2 = 2y ⇒ y = 1 (ii) n(C) = 5 + 2y and n(A) = 15 ⇒ 5 + 2y = 15 ⇒ 2y = 10 , y = 5 (error in question as there is inconsistency)
