Why x + x = 2 x ?

if you have a basket of

x apples and i have an identical basket

of x apples, we have 2 baskets of x apples

so, 2 x means two groups of x

multiplication is another form of writing

additiom, essentially .

2 x = x + x

x^{2} = x \times x = x + x + \dots + x (x times)

x^{x} = x \times x \times \dots \times x (x times)

= (x + x + \dots + x (x t i m e s)) {x t i m e s}

x + x = 1 \times x + 1 \times x [1 is multiplicative identity]

= (1 + 1) \times x [R i g h t distributive law of^{'} \times^{'} over^{'} +^{'}]

= 2 \times x = 2 x
