$$\mathrm{42}+{y}=\mathrm{3}\left(\mathrm{8}+{y}\right) \\ $$$$\mathrm{42}+{y}=\mathrm{24}+\mathrm{3}{y} \\ $$$$\mathrm{18}=\mathrm{2}{y} \\ $$$${y}=\mathrm{9} \\ $$
