 side of big square    = 8+ 4(√2)      ⇒ side of red square   = 8+ 4(√2) − 8   = 4(√2)      area   = 32
$$\:\mathrm{side}\:\mathrm{of}\:\mathrm{big}\:\mathrm{square}\: \\ $$$$\:=\:\mathrm{8}+\:\mathrm{4}\sqrt{\mathrm{2}} \\ $$$$\: \\ $$$$\:\Rightarrow\:\mathrm{side}\:\mathrm{of}\:\mathrm{red}\:\mathrm{square} \\ $$$$\:=\:\mathrm{8}+\:\mathrm{4}\sqrt{\mathrm{2}}\:−\:\mathrm{8} \\ $$$$\:=\:\mathrm{4}\sqrt{\mathrm{2}} \\ $$$$\: \\ $$$$\:\mathrm{area} \\ $$$$\:=\:\mathrm{32} \\ $$
