there is no unique solution for x−y=?.

it doesn′t matter that x<y. but the  question x−y=? has no unique answer.  or do you have a problem with things  like 2−4 ?

in this question you can not  determine x−y or y−x.

Do you think the side (length) can be  negative?

x <y means only that the side x is  shorter than the side y. it doesn′t  mean that the length of side x is   negative !!!
$${x}\:<{y}\:{means}\:{only}\:{that}\:{the}\:{side}\:{x}\:{is} \\ $$$${shorter}\:{than}\:{the}\:{side}\:{y}.\:{it}\:{doesn}'{t} \\ $$$${mean}\:{that}\:{the}\:{length}\:{of}\:{side}\:{x}\:{is}\: \\ $$$${negative}\:!!! \\ $$

So the question (condition) is wrong...
