the same old question the 1.000.000.000th  time.  the cable hangs down 40 meters from each  pole. if the cable is 80 meters long, there′s  no length left ⇒ the poles have distance 0

but a freely hanging cable is a smooth  curve, not a straight or zigzag line.

here it is a logic question. you don′t  need to calculate, but to think. this  question should be answered correctly  by everybody.    but you must calculate, if the cable is  for example 100 m long. and this  can not be answered by everybody. you  must understand  some special  mathematics to solve it.
