The ratio of the profit, cost of materials  and labour in the production of an article  is 5:7:13 respectively. If the cost of materials  is $ 840 more than that of labour, find  the total cost of producing the article.

 according to the ratio given, the cost   of material cannot be more than the  labour cost. If it is less instead, then     (7/(5+7+13)) × t = c − 840   ((13)/(5+7+13)) × t = c  ⇒    (7/(13)) = ((c − 840)/c)           7c  =  13c − 10920              c = $ 1,820   total cost of production = $ 1820 +                                                           $ (1820−840)                                                      = $ 2,800
