One man adds 3 litres of water to 12 litres of milk and another 4 litres of water to 10 litres of milk. What is the ratio of the strengths of milk in the two mixtures?

(water+milk)_(first) =3+12=15 %milk=((12)/(15))×100=(4/5)×100=80 (water+milk)_(second) =4+10=14 %milk=((10)/(14))×100=71.43
$$\left({water}+{milk}\right)_{{first}} =\mathrm{3}+\mathrm{12}=\mathrm{15} \\ $$$$\%{milk}=\frac{\mathrm{12}}{\mathrm{15}}×\mathrm{100}=\frac{\mathrm{4}}{\mathrm{5}}×\mathrm{100}=\mathrm{80} \\ $$$$\left({water}+{milk}\right)_{{second}} =\mathrm{4}+\mathrm{10}=\mathrm{14} \\ $$$$\%{milk}=\frac{\mathrm{10}}{\mathrm{14}}×\mathrm{100}=\mathrm{71}.\mathrm{43} \\ $$

mixture 1 contains ((12)/(3+12))=(4/5) milk mixture 2 contains ((10)/(4+10))=(5/7) milk ((mixture 1)/(mixture 2))=((28)/(25)) ⇒ ratio is 28:25
$$\mathrm{mixture}\:\mathrm{1}\:\mathrm{contains}\:\frac{\mathrm{12}}{\mathrm{3}+\mathrm{12}}=\frac{\mathrm{4}}{\mathrm{5}}\:\mathrm{milk} \\ $$$$\mathrm{mixture}\:\mathrm{2}\:\mathrm{contains}\:\frac{\mathrm{10}}{\mathrm{4}+\mathrm{10}}=\frac{\mathrm{5}}{\mathrm{7}}\:\mathrm{milk} \\ $$$$\frac{\mathrm{mixture}\:\mathrm{1}}{\mathrm{mixture}\:\mathrm{2}}=\frac{\mathrm{28}}{\mathrm{25}}\:\Rightarrow\:\mathrm{ratio}\:\mathrm{is}\:\mathrm{28}:\mathrm{25} \\ $$
