If the roots of the equation x^2 −px+q=0  differ by unity, then

(α−β)^2 =p^2 −4q=1  or     p^2 −4q−1=0 .
$$\left(\alpha−\beta\right)^{\mathrm{2}} ={p}^{\mathrm{2}} −\mathrm{4}{q}=\mathrm{1} \\ $$$${or}\:\:\:\:\:{p}^{\mathrm{2}} −\mathrm{4}{q}−\mathrm{1}=\mathrm{0}\:. \\ $$
