x: tricycles,y:taxicabs  x+y=20  2x+4y=66  2x+2y=40  2x+4y=66            2y=26              y=13   x=20−13=7

$${x}:\:{tricycles},{y}:{taxicabs} \\ $$$${x}+{y}=\mathrm{20} \\ $$$$\mathrm{2}{x}+\mathrm{4}{y}=\mathrm{66} \\ $$$$\mathrm{2}{x}+\mathrm{2}{y}=\mathrm{40} \\ $$$$\mathrm{2}{x}+\mathrm{4}{y}=\mathrm{66} \\ $$$$\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\mathrm{2}{y}=\mathrm{26} \\ $$$$\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:{y}=\mathrm{13} \\ $$$$\:{x}=\mathrm{20}−\mathrm{13}=\mathrm{7} \\ $$

Using only single variable.  tricycles:x  taxicabs:20−x  2x+4(20−x)=66         x=7 :tricycles  20−x=20−7=13 : taxicabs

$${Using}\:{only}\:{single}\:{variable}. \\ $$$${tricycles}:{x} \\ $$$${taxicabs}:\mathrm{20}−{x} \\ $$$$\mathrm{2}{x}+\mathrm{4}\left(\mathrm{20}−{x}\right)=\mathrm{66} \\ $$$$\:\:\:\:\:\:\:{x}=\mathrm{7}\::{tricycles} \\ $$$$\mathrm{20}−{x}=\mathrm{20}−\mathrm{7}=\mathrm{13}\::\:{taxicabs} \\ $$
