$$\sqrt{a^2+{(a+1)}^2+4}=3$$$$2a^2+2a-4=0$$$$a^2+a-2=0\Rightarrow (a+2)(a-1)=0\to \{\begin{array}{l}a=-2\\ a=1\end{array}$$
