$$\frac{\underset{j=1}{\sum ^{x-1}}j}{x}=\frac{x-1}{2}=3\Rightarrow x=7$$

$$$$$$3x=(x-1)+(x-2)+.....+1$$$$0=(-1)+(-2)+(-3)+(x-4)+.....+1$$$$0=-6+(x-4)+.....+1$$$$6=(x-4)+.....+1$$$$6=\frac{(x-4)(x-3)}{2}$$$$12=(x-4)(x-3)$$$$12=x^2-7x+12$$$$0=x^2-7x$$$$0=x(x-7)$$$$x=7$$$$$$
