7x−5x=142  2x=142  x=71  number of cars=5x                                   =355  number of motorcycles=7x

$$\mathrm{7}{x}−\mathrm{5}{x}=\mathrm{142} \\ $$$$\mathrm{2}{x}=\mathrm{142} \\ $$$${x}=\mathrm{71} \\ $$$${number}\:{of}\:{cars}=\mathrm{5}{x} \\ $$$$\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:=\mathrm{355} \\ $$$${number}\:{of}\:{motorcycles}=\mathrm{7}{x} \\ $$$$ \\ $$

c:m=5:7  [c:cars sold, m:motorcycles sold]  (c/(c+142))=(5/7) [in a particular month]  7c=5c+710  c=355  m=c+142=355+142=497

$${c}:{m}=\mathrm{5}:\mathrm{7}\:\:\left[{c}:{cars}\:{sold},\:{m}:{motorcycles}\:{sold}\right] \\ $$$$\frac{{c}}{{c}+\mathrm{142}}=\frac{\mathrm{5}}{\mathrm{7}}\:\left[{in}\:{a}\:{particular}\:{month}\right] \\ $$$$\mathrm{7}{c}=\mathrm{5}{c}+\mathrm{710} \\ $$$${c}=\mathrm{355} \\ $$$${m}={c}+\mathrm{142}=\mathrm{355}+\mathrm{142}=\mathrm{497} \\ $$
