This is the definition of dot product of  2 vectors. You can find it in every  book about vectors.

$$\mathrm{This}\:\mathrm{is}\:\mathrm{the}\:\mathrm{definition}\:\mathrm{of}\:\mathrm{dot}\:\mathrm{product}\:\mathrm{of} \\ $$$$\mathrm{2}\:\mathrm{vectors}.\:\mathrm{You}\:\mathrm{can}\:\mathrm{find}\:\mathrm{it}\:\mathrm{in}\:\mathrm{every} \\ $$$$\mathrm{book}\:\mathrm{about}\:\mathrm{vectors}. \\ $$
