$$\left[\begin{array}{cc}2& 3\\ -1& -1\end{array}\right]+a\left[\begin{array}{cc}2& 1\\ 0& 4\end{array}\right]=\left[\begin{array}{cc}8& b\\ c& d\end{array}\right]$$$$\left[\begin{array}{cc}2a+2& a+3\\ 0a-1& 4a-1\end{array}\right]=\left[\begin{array}{cc}8& b\\ c& d\end{array}\right]$$$$2a+2=8\Rightarrow a=3$$$$c=-1$$$$b=a+3=3+3=6$$$$d=4a-1=4\left(3\right)-1=11$$
