Answer given is 2,3-Dibromopentyl benzene I can't understand why

yaa , i have corrected.  writing 1− in starting   will not affect iupac name as it   implies one and the same thing.

Why pentyl is used and not phenyl?

phenyl is used for benzene when   it is present as substituted group.  here benzene is the main chain.

$${phenyl}\:{is}\:{used}\:{for}\:{benzene}\:{when}\: \\ $$$${it}\:{is}\:{present}\:{as}\:{substituted}\:{group}. \\ $$$${here}\:{benzene}\:{is}\:{the}\:{main}\:{chain}. \\ $$

the chain which has max. no.of   carbon atoms is called parent/main  chain.

in ncert class 11 part 2 , all these stuff  is clearly explained. you better refer it.

This is NCERT solved question on page 340. Phenyl is used there!
