should be tensile so (3).

$${should}\:{be}\:{tensile}\:\:{so}\:\:\left(\mathrm{3}\right). \\ $$

Why tensile? It acts downwards so why not compressive?

Commented by ajfour last updated on 11/May/18

it acts downward so rod must be stretched, hence tensile force.

$${it}\:{acts}\:{downward}\:{so}\:{rod}\:{must}\:{be} \\ $$$${stretched},\:{hence}\:{tensile}\:{force}. \\ $$
