Question Number 20054 by Tinkutara last updated on 21/Aug/17

If α and β (α < β) are the roots of the equation x^2 + bx + c = 0, where c < 0 < b, then (1) 0 < α < β (2) α < 0 < β < ∣α∣ (3) α < β < 0 (4) α < 0 < ∣α∣ < β

Ifαandβ(α<β)aretherootsoftheequationx2+bx+c=0,wherec<0<b,then(1)0<α<β(2)α<0<β<α(3)α<β<0(4)α<0<α<β

  c < 0 < b , α+β=−b , αβ=c ⇒ x= ((α+β)/2) =((−b)/2) < 0 & αβ=c < 0 ⇒ α< 0 and β > 0 further since ((α+β)/2) <0 , ∣α∣>β so correct option is (2).

c<0<b,α+β=b,αβ=cx=α+β2=b2<0&αβ=c<0α<0andβ>0furthersinceα+β2<0,α∣>βsocorrectoptionis(2).
