$$\mathrm{The}\mathrm{scale}\mathrm{of}\mathrm{a}\mathrm{map}\mathrm{is}1:40,000.\mathrm{Calculate}$$$$\mathrm{the}\mathrm{area}\mathrm{in}\mathrm{square}\mathrm{centimeters}\mathrm{on}\mathrm{the}$$$$\mathrm{map}\mathrm{of}\mathrm{forest}\mathrm{reserved}\mathrm{which}\mathrm{covers}$$$${170\mathrm{km}}^2.$$$$\mathrm{please}\mathrm{help}\mathrm{solve}\mathrm{this}\mathrm{question}$$

$$scale1:40000means$$$$1cmonmap=40000cminreality$$$$or$$$$1cmonmap=400minreality$$$$or$$$$1cmonmap=0.4kminreality$$$$or$$$$1{cm}^{2}onmap=0.4^2=0.16{km}^{2}inreality$$$$nowthequestionis$$$$x{cm}^{2}onmap=170{km}^{2}inreality?$$$$\frac{x}{1}=\frac{170}{0.16}$$$$\Rightarrow x=170/0.16=1062.5{cm}^2$$
