scale 1:40000 means 1 cm on map = 40000 cm in reality or 1 cm on map = 400 m in reality or 1 cm on map = 0.4 km in reality or 1 cm^2 on map = 0.4^2 =0.16 km^2 in reality now the question is x cm^2 on map =170 km^2 in reality? (x/1)=((170)/(0.16)) ⇒x=170/0.16=1062.5 cm^2
