$$\mathrm{no}\mathrm{matter}\mathrm{which}\mathrm{shape}\mathrm{you}\mathrm{enlarge}$$$$\mathrm{sides}\left(\mathrm{or}\mathrm{perimeter}\right)\times n\Rightarrow \mathrm{area}\times n^2$$$$\mathrm{sides}\frac{\mathrm{new}}{\mathrm{old}}=\frac{3}{1}\Rightarrow \mathrm{area}\frac{\mathrm{new}}{\mathrm{old}}=\frac{9}{1}$$
